Melt value = the value of the silver metal content only, at the current spot price. Collector/numismatic coins can be worth far more than melt. Silver content figures are standard published weights for circulated US coins; heavily worn coins weigh slightly less. Not a certified appraisal.

How the silver coin calculator works

Every US "junk silver" coin contains a fixed, known amount of pure silver. This calculator multiplies the number of coins you enter by that silver weight and by the live silver spot price above, then adds it all up. It covers the three main US silver alloys: 90% silver (pre-1965 dimes, quarters, half dollars, and silver dollars), 40% silver (1965–1970 Kennedy half dollars and 1971–1976 silver Eisenhower dollars), and the 35% silver "war nickels" minted 1942–1945.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate the melt value of silver coins?
Multiply the number of each coin by its known silver content (in troy ounces) and by the current silver spot price, then add the results. For example, a pre-1965 quarter contains 0.1808 troy ounces of silver, so at a $31.50/oz spot price it holds about $5.70 in silver. The calculator above does this automatically for every US silver coin type.
What is "junk silver"?
"Junk silver" refers to circulated US coins that contain silver but have no collector premium above their metal value — mainly pre-1965 90% silver dimes, quarters, half dollars and dollars, plus 40% Kennedy halves and 35% war nickels. They are traded for their silver content, which is what this calculator measures.
Which US coins contain silver?
US dimes, quarters, half dollars and dollars minted in 1964 and earlier are 90% silver. Kennedy half dollars from 1965–1970 are 40% silver, silver Eisenhower dollars (1971–1976 collector issues) are 40% silver, and Jefferson nickels from 1942–1945 ("war nickels") are 35% silver. Most US coins from 1965 onward contain no silver.
Is my coin worth more than its melt value?
Often, yes. Key dates, low-mintage years, mint marks (such as a Carson City "CC" Morgan dollar), errors, and high grades can make a coin worth many times its silver content. Melt value is the floor, not the ceiling. To check whether you have a collectible piece, get a free AI valuation.
Where can I sell silver coins?
Options include local coin dealers, bullion buyers, and auction houses for rarer pieces. For collectible or higher-value coins, an auction house often achieves the best price — compare coins & currency specialists and their fees first.
