Schulman b.v. is a numismatic auction house and coin dealer in Amsterdam. It is one of the oldest firms in the coin trade and calls itself the oldest coin auction house in the Netherlands. Its buyers and consignors come from around 80 countries.

Schulman is a member of the International Association of Professional Numismatists (IAPN) and of the NVMH, the Dutch association of coin dealers. Under its IAPN membership it guarantees the authenticity of the coins and medals it sells, and buyers can return items found not to be genuine for a full refund.

History

The company was founded in the Netherlands in 1880 by Jacob Schulman. It held its first auction in 1890 and has since organised hundreds of coin sales, with auction number 400 approaching. Its June 2026 sales were numbered 392 for coins and 8 for paper money.

Alongside the Amsterdam head office, the firm runs Schulman Scandinavia in Kungsbacka, Sweden, as a contact point for collectors in Sweden, Norway and Denmark. The Amsterdam office is led by managing director Andrew Absil.

Selling at Schulman

Valuations are free and non-binding. Sellers can send a few photographs by email, call, or visit the Amsterdam office by appointment, and the firm handles anything from a single coin to a complete collection or estate. Coins with only metal value may be bought outright, while rare or sought-after pieces are usually recommended for auction.

For auction consignments, the commission percentage is discussed and agreed in advance. After the sale the seller receives a full overview of results and payment follows under the agreed terms. The firm presents lots with professional photography and a printed hardcover catalogue, and can arrange certification through grading services such as NGC and PCGS.

Buying and bidding

Schulman holds several auctions a year, with regular seasonal sales, selection auctions for high-value lots and online e-auctions for broader material. Bidders can take part in the saleroom in Amsterdam, by written bid, by telephone for higher-value lots, or live online through the firm's own platform and app at auctions.schulman.nl. Written bids can also be placed through Sixbid and NumisBids.

Under the conditions of sale, lots are sold with a premium of 24% of the hammer price. An extra fee of 3% applies to lots bought through Schulman's live internet auction system. Postage, insurance and bank charges are added to the invoice.

Location and viewing

Schulman is at Jan Luijkenstraat 94, 1071 CV Amsterdam, and is open Monday to Friday from 10.00 to 18.00, with visits by appointment. Viewing takes place in Amsterdam in the week before each auction, when specialists can answer questions on condition, provenance and authenticity. Lots can be collected by appointment or sent insured by courier within the Netherlands and abroad.
