Tauler & Fau (Tauler&Fau, S.L.) is a Madrid auction house that specialises in coins and numismatic material. Its offices are at Calle Marqués de Urquijo 34, and its sales cover coins from ancient Greece to the euro. The house says its team brings more than 50 years of experience in coin auctions.

History

The house was co-founded by Rafael Tauler (now deceased) and Jacobo Fau, who remains its director. Rafael Tauler was a collector of Spanish cob coinage (macuquinas) and author of reference catalogues on the subject. Jacobo Fau is a numismatist who says he became interested in coins at the age of 15. The in-house team includes numismatic technicians and outside advisers who specialise in Iberian and Spanish coinage.

According to Panorama Numismático, its first auction was held on 17 May 2017 at the Hotel Miguel Ángel in Madrid. The house now also operates as an official submission centre for NGC coin grading.

Sales cover every period of Spanish coinage as well as ancient and world coins. Specialists on staff focus on Hispano-Arabic coinage, Iberian denarii, Greek coins, countermarked coins and gold and silver bullion.

Sales and notable results

The house holds monthly auctions and says 96.94% of lots offered in 2025 found buyers. It also stages selected "Selection" sales. At the online-only Selection auction reported by Panorama Numismático in December 2020, a Mexico 1747 8 escudos of Ferdinand VI was hammered at €15,500 and an aureus of Caligula and Agrippina at €15,000. A Carthage stater from 350–320 BC made €9,500.

Selling at Tauler & Fau

The house buys coins outright and takes consignments for auction. It advertises valuation and buying services in Barcelona, Seville, Valencia, Bilbao, Málaga, Zaragoza, A Coruña, Vigo and Mallorca, as well as Madrid. Terms for consignors are agreed individually.

Buying and bidding

Under its conditions of sale, the invoice adds a commission of 20% to the hammer price, VAT included. Bids can be placed in advance, live online in real time, by telephone, by email, or through international bidding platforms. Advance bids take priority over live bids at the same amount, and lots are sold at the lowest price the competition allows.

Live bidding follows a fixed scale of increments. Steps are €5 up to €100, €50 up to €1,000, €250 up to €10,000 and €1,000 up to €50,000, rising to €10,000 above €100,000. A proforma invoice is emailed within an hour of the sale ending. Card payments carry a 1% surcharge inside the EU and 1.95% outside the EU.

Coins are sent by courier or post, with shipping and insurance added to the invoice, or can be collected from the Madrid office. If a coin has a defect that was not described in the listing, the buyer can return it within seven calendar days of receiving it by giving written notice. Differences of opinion about grade are not accepted as grounds for a return.
