History

The firm's origins trace back to the early twentieth century, when Edmund Tennant, born in 1876, worked as a stonemason, grocer and agricultural merchant in Middleham, near Leyburn. His son, also named Edmund, expanded the family business into auctioneering, and the tradition continued with Edmund's sons John and Rodney, both of whom became auctioneers. In 1971, John Tennant established the business in Leyburn, and over the following decades the firm transitioned from general auctioneering to focus exclusively on fine art and antiques, a shift completed by 1988.

The current Auction Centre first opened in 1993, and in 2014 it was substantially expanded with the opening of The Garden Rooms, a versatile events and exhibition space that has become a cultural destination in its own right.
