Anderson & Garland is an auction house and valuer based at Anderson House, Crispin Court, Westerhope, in Newcastle upon Tyne. It describes itself as the leading firm of auctioneers and valuers in the North of England and the Scottish Borders, and as one of the largest independent auction houses in the UK. It is the only North East firm in SOFAA, the Society of Fine Art Auctioneers.

The firm holds up to 60 auctions each year across more than 20 specialist departments, and says it serves clients in over 105 countries. Probate work is a long-standing part of the business.

History

Anderson & Garland was established in 1840 and has been present in Newcastle ever since. With more than 180 years of trading, it is one of the oldest auction firms in the North East. In 2022 it launched a land and property division, A&G Land & Property.

The firm runs a busy calendar of fine and specialist sales alongside regular homes and interiors auctions. Its departments include:

Several auctions are scheduled each month, so there is usually a sale in preparation in one department or another. The fine sales, such as the fine art and country house auctions, run alongside regular Homes and Interiors sales for everyday furniture and household items. Specialist sales such as the Music, Toys and Collectors' auctions sit between the two, giving sellers a route to market for most types of object.

Buying and bidding

Buyers pay the hammer price plus a buyer's premium of 25% plus VAT, which is 30% including VAT. For vehicles the premium is reduced to 10% plus VAT. The firm notes that the VAT on the premium is not normally recoverable by the buyer.

There are several ways to bid:

• Online through the firm's website: live bidding and absentee bids, which can be placed up to 30 minutes before the sale starts at no charge
• the-saleroom: live bidding with an extra 4.95% plus VAT fee
• Telephone: for lots estimated over £250, with a £10 plus VAT charge per lot bought for less than £250
• In person: in the saleroom during the auction

Online bidders register with bank card verification. Payment is due within five working days for fine auctions and within two working days for homes and interiors and specialist auctions. Bank transfer, card, cash and banker's draft are accepted.

Location and viewing

The purpose-built saleroom covers 20,000 sq ft and sits just off the A1 in Newcastle, with free onsite parking. It is close to Newcastle International Airport and Newcastle Central Station. Public viewing takes place at Anderson House in the days before each sale, and photographs of every lot are published online. The firm recommends inspecting lots in person, noting that images are for general guidance and colours may vary. Purchases must be collected within two working days, and a local shipping service is available.
