About VF-Auktion

VF-Auktion, the auction business of Valby Frimærkecenter, is a specialist stamp and coin auction house in Hvidovre on the western edge of Copenhagen. It runs its sales online, but it also has its own premises at Stamholmen 157, where it values consignments and holds viewings before its larger sales. It describes itself as the largest stamp auction house in Denmark.

The house offers stamps from Denmark, Scandinavia and overseas, from common, inexpensive issues to rare pieces. It also holds separate auctions for coins and banknotes, model trains and Second World War material.

History

According to the Danish company register, the business was registered in January 1995 as Valby Frimærkecenter v/Anders Claudius Bodenhoff. It later traded as Valby Frimærkecenter/Ege Bjerregaard frimærkehandel and has used the name VF-auktion since April 2023. The register also shows a move to the present address in Hvidovre in 2024. Anders Bodenhoff is still listed as owner and valuer on the house's own staff page.

What VF-Auktion sells

Stamps are the core of the business, and coins are the second main category. The auction calendar includes:

• Monthly stamp auction: single stamps, covers, postcards, philatelic literature, collections, boxes and larger lots
• Weekly stamp auction: single stamps, covers, postcards and material mounted on A4 display sheets, all shown online
• Coins and banknotes: Danish coins, including rare and old Danish issues, coins from the Viking Age and the Middle Ages, modern coins, and foreign coins and banknotes
• Model trains: a separate sale with its own viewing
• Second World War material: a separate themed sale

The house has staff responsible for each area, including stamps, coins and model trains. It says it values each lot carefully and splits consignments into smaller lots, because in its experience this gives the seller the best total result.

Selling at VF-Auktion

You can hand in material at the Hvidovre premises or send it by post or carrier, and the house gives you a receipt. Each consignment is reviewed and valued, and the estimate is based on earlier sales of similar material. Consignments are accepted all the time for both stamp auctions. A consignment must have a total estimate of at least DKK 1,500. Monthly auction lots should average DKK 350, with a minimum starting price of DKK 100, and weekly auction lots should average DKK 150, with a minimum starting price of DKK 50.

• Monthly auction: 15% of the hammer price, with no lot fee and no fee on unsold lots
• Weekly auction: 10% of the hammer price plus a lot fee of DKK 10 for each lot handed in, sold or unsold, or DKK 5 for a lot offered again
• Settlement: sellers are paid by bank transfer about five weeks after the auction

Across a four-week cycle of three stamp auctions, the house sells around 7,500 lots. Unsold lots can be offered again at a lower estimate.

Buying and bidding

Bidding takes place on the website, and bids can also be sent in writing or by telephone until 17:00 on the auction day. Registration is free. Internet bids must raise the current bid by at least 5%. If a bid arrives in the last five minutes, that lot is extended by five minutes. If the highest bid is more than 10% above the next highest, the price is cut to the second bid plus 10%.

• Buyer's premium: 22% on top of the hammer price, plus any postage
• VAT: used items are sold under the Danish margin scheme for second-hand goods, so buyers cannot deduct VAT
• Returns: buyers have a 14-day right of return, as with normal internet purchases
• Payment: online by Dankort, Visa or Mastercard, by bank or giro transfer, or in the shop

Location and viewing

The shop and auction premises are on the second floor of Stamholmen 157, 2650 Hvidovre. They are open Monday to Friday from 10:00 to 17:00 and on Saturday mornings before a monthly auction. The monthly stamp auction is held every four weeks, with viewings on the Saturday, Monday and Tuesday before it closes. The weekly auction runs every second week and has no viewing. The coin and banknote auction and the model train auction are each held every four weeks, with viewings on the Monday and Tuesday before.
